Why the Romance World Needs a New Reading App (and What We’re Building)

Updated: May 12

Romance is the most popular genre in publishing, yet readers and authors often feel overlooked by mainstream platforms. From generic algorithms and pay-per-chapter schemes to low author compensation, the romance community deserves better. That’s why we’re building a new kind of reading app - one that puts romance front and centre, empowers writers, and delights readers.

What’s Missing from the Current Market

Current digital reading platforms often fail to serve romance readers in meaningful ways:

  • Poor trope tagging and search tools make it hard to find exactly what you want (hello, spicy alien enemies-to-lovers with forced proximity and consent play!).

  • Overloaded recommendations miss the nuance of reader preferences.

  • Underpaid authors receive only a fraction of what their stories earn (we know, we're self-publishing authors, too).

  • Lack of community features makes reading feel isolating.

  • Author tools like reader preferences and analytics are often gate-kept.

What We’re Building

We’re designing an app from the ground up for modern romance lovers. Here’s what we’re focusing on:

1. Personalised Book Recommendations - Our tailored recommendation engine (aptly called The Oracle) doesn’t just guess what you might like. You choose exactly what you want to read and we show you what we have to offer!

2. Trope-Based Browsing - Not sure what it is that you do want? We get it! That's why we've created a curated list with fan-favourite tropes.

3. Author Empowerment & Fair Compensation - We believe the people creating the magic should be fairly paid. Our transparent payout model ensures authors are compensated for the actual time and engagement their stories generate. No royalties, no per-page-read fixed price.

4. Analytics That Work for Writers - Authors get access to meaningful insights into their audience, performance, and reading patterns. No more guessing what your readers want. Write what you love, with a market twist!

5. A Space for Community & Conversation - Book reviews, comments, favourite quotes, and curated discussions - because reading romance is even better when you can scream about your book-boyfriend with someone who gets it.

6. Books that promote sex-positivity - Yes, they're spicy and steamy - the right way! Opening conversations around safe practices, kinks, consent and so much more in a safe environment.

Opening Up the Conversation

We’re not just creating a product, we’re building a platform for open, inclusive dialogue. Our blog explores:

  • Trends in the romance genre and what they mean for readers and writers.

  • Deep dives into tropes and why we love them.

  • Sex positivity and body positivity in storytelling.

  • Writing advice tailored to romance authors, from spicy tension to emotional beats.

What’s Next

We’re currently prepping for our pre-launch campaign, where we’ll be sharing sneak peeks, behind-the-scenes updates, and early access opportunities. If you love romance and want to be part of a revolutionary movement, now’s the time to join!

Follow along, fall in love, and help us build the future of romance reading and self-publishing!
